The construction industry is too important to get wrong. It delivers the homes we live in, the schools we educate our children in and the hospitals we rely on when we become ill. Yet for decades our industry has been notorious for low productivity, missed deadlines and shaky profit margins. Despite this, very little has changed - indeed a construction worker from a century ago would recognise most of what we still do today. If construction is to break out this cycle of poor performance then we need to transform the way we deliver construction projects, from inception to handover. 

New technology can help but it is no silver bullet. Many organisations have invested millions in digital software and manufacturing hardware, only to see negligible improvements and a big hole in their balance sheets. It is our entire approach to construction that needs to change, not just the equipment we use. Unless we completely rethink the way we deliver in the built environment, from systems and processes to mindsets and behaviours, then purchasing new technology will have no better impact than attaching satellite navigation to a horse.
